How each blend is built

Seven constructions run on every pair of names you type, and each result is labelled with the one that produced it. Nothing is random, so the same two names always give the same list.

The seven methods

  1. Syllable blend. The first syllable or two of name A joined to the last syllable or two of name B. A name of three syllables or more lends two; a shorter one lends one.
  2. Reverse syllable blend. The same trade in the other direction, which almost always sounds different rather than mirrored.
  3. Onset and rime. The opening consonant cluster of A placed in front of B from its first vowel onwards. Onset and rime are the two pieces a syllable divides into, and splitting there is why “Bri” plus “ella” sounds like a name while “Brie” plus “lla” does not. If A begins with a vowel and so has no cluster to lend, its first vowel group is used instead.
  4. Overlap merge. If a tail of A is also a head of B, up to four letters, the two fuse at that join. Anna and Nathan share an “n”, so they become Annathan.
  5. Interleave. Consonant runs and vowel runs taken alternately, A then B then A.
  6. Initial graft. A’s opening letters on B’s body.
  7. Three-name braid. One syllable from each of three names, in the order you typed them — the first syllable of each except the last, which lends its last.

How syllables are counted

By vowel groups, which is the rule taught in phonics. Every run of vowels is a syllable nucleus; a single consonant between two of them goes with the following group and two or more split down the middle. Two adjustments matter for names: a lone silent final “e” is not a syllable of its own, so Grace is one syllable rather than two, but a final consonant plus “le” is, which keeps Isabelle intact. It is a heuristic rather than a dictionary lookup, so it will occasionally be wrong about an unusual name.

What gets discarded

Raw output is tidied first: three identical letters in a row become two, a doubled vowel before another vowel loses one, and a doubled consonant before another consonant loses one. A blend is then only shown if it has at least two consonants, no run of three vowels, no pile of four consonants, no doubled vowel at the start, is between three and twelve letters long, and differs from both parent names. Your ending and length preferences reorder the surviving list rather than shortening it, so nothing you have already seen disappears when you change your mind.

Why one blend is never enough

The standard name blender does exactly one thing. It cuts the first name in half, cuts the second name in half, and glues the pieces together. You get one word, the word is usually unpronounceable, and every site you try returns the same word, because they are all doing the same operation.

That is a shame, because blending names is genuinely useful. Not because you will necessarily use the result — some people do, most do not — but because it breaks the deadlock. By month six of a pregnancy, most couples have had the same name conversation eleven times and are circling the same four options with the same objections. A tool that hands you thirty new words, some of them ridiculous, is a way of talking about names again without talking about the same names again.

Seven ways of joining two words

This tool runs seven constructions and labels each result with the one that produced it, so you can see how a blend was built rather than being handed a word out of nowhere. Some of them are obvious: take the front of one name and the back of the other, then do it the other way round. Some are less so.

The most useful is the onset and rime split. Every English syllable divides into an onset, the consonant sound it starts with, and a rime, the vowel and everything after it. Splitting names at that boundary rather than in the middle of a syllable is why some blends sound like names and others sound like typing. The overlap merge is the other one worth knowing: if the end of one name is also the start of the other, they can fuse there rather than being stitched, and the join disappears completely.

Then there is the three-name braid, which exists because of a specific and very common problem. Two grandmothers, one grandfather, one baby, and a family that will notice. Taking a syllable from each of three names in order gives you something that genuinely contains all of them, which is a better answer than a stack of three middle names.

The syllable rule, and where it breaks

Syllables are counted by vowel groups. Every run of vowels forms the centre of a syllable, and the consonants between two vowel groups are divided up: a single one attaches to the following syllable, two or more split down the middle. That is the rule taught in phonics, and it gets ordinary names right far more often than not.

Two exceptions matter enough to be coded in. A silent final “e” is not a syllable of its own, so Grace is one syllable rather than two, and Kate is one rather than two. But a final consonant followed by “le” is a syllable, which is what keeps Isabelle and Annabelle intact instead of chopping their endings off.

It will still be wrong sometimes, particularly with names from languages whose spelling does not map onto English vowel groups. When it is wrong you get a blend that reads oddly, not an error. That is a fair trade for a tool whose entire purpose is to be played with.

What gets thrown away before you see it

Left alone, these constructions produce things like “Iaoee” and “Eiam”. So every candidate has to clear a floor before it is shown: at least two consonants, no run of three vowels, no pile of four consonants, no doubled vowel at the start, three to twelve letters, and it has to differ from both of the names you typed. Before that check, triple letters are collapsed to doubles, because no English word has three of anything in a row.

The result is a shorter list than a naive blender would give you and a considerably more usable one. If two names produce nothing at all, the tool says so rather than showing you rubbish — usually that happens when both names start and end on the same sounds, and swapping one of them fixes it.

It does not shuffle, and that is deliberate

The same two names give the same list every time. A generator that reshuffles on every keystroke is unusable in practice: you spot something you like, you type one more letter to test a variation, and the thing you liked is gone forever. The ending and length preferences reorder the list rather than filtering it, for the same reason. Nothing you have already seen vanishes because you changed your mind about what you wanted.

Before you write it on anything

Say it out loud. Then say it the way a tired stranger at a school gate would say it, and the way it will be shouted across a playground. Check the initials against your surname, because that is the joke you cannot take back. Work out what it would be shortened to, since that is the name that will actually get used every day. Search it, in case it means something unfortunate in a language spoken by someone you will meet.

And know that the law is not the obstacle people assume. In the UK, the United States, Australia and Canada you register whatever first name you choose when you register the birth, and invented names are entirely ordinary. A handful of countries elsewhere do restrict what may be registered, so if you are registering a birth outside those four, check the local rule before you settle on something new.

What this tool is not

It is not a meaning generator, and it does not pretend that a blend inherits the meanings of the names that made it. It has no opinion about whether a name is a good idea. And it cannot tell you what your family will say. It is a way of generating options quickly, privately, and without a single thing you type ever leaving your own device.
