Are energy drinks safe during pregnancy?

No. In the UK, EU, Canada, Australia and New Zealand the law requires energy drinks to state that they are not recommended for pregnant women. A 250ml can carries about 80mg of caffeine, 40% of the 200mg daily limit, and the caffeine is not the only reason for the warning.

The verdict

No. This is the only food or drink on the site where the answer is printed on the packaging by law.

In the UK and the EU, any drink containing more than 150mg of caffeine per litre must carry the words: High caffeine content. Not recommended for children or pregnant or breast-feeding women. In Canada, caffeinated energy drinks must state: Not recommended for those under 14 years old, pregnant or breastfeeding women or individuals sensitive to caffeine. In Australia and New Zealand, Standard 2.6.4 requires formulated caffeinated beverages to say they are not recommended for children, pregnant or lactating women and individuals sensitive to caffeine.

Four regulators, three continents, the same instruction, all of it mandatory. The United States requires none of it.

Why the warning exists

Caffeine is the obvious part and the smaller part of the story. The NHS puts a 250ml can of energy drink at 80mg of caffeine, against a 200mg daily limit in pregnancy - so two cans and nothing else caffeinated puts you at 160mg, and a large can does it on its own. Caffeine crosses the placenta freely, a fetus has very limited capacity to clear it, and maternal clearance slows progressively as pregnancy advances.

But if caffeine were the whole issue, coffee would carry the same label, and it does not. The EU labelling rule explicitly exempts drinks based on coffee or tea. What separates an energy drink is everything else in it.

Energy drinks combine added caffeine with taurine, glucuronolactone, high doses of B vitamins, and botanical caffeine sources such as guarana and yerba mate - which contribute caffeine that is not always fully counted in the headline figure. The combination has never been evaluated for use in pregnancy, and no regulator claims otherwise. The warning is not a finding that these ingredients harm a fetus; it is an acknowledgement that a stimulant cocktail formulated for alertness has no established safety profile in pregnancy and no reason to be consumed during it.

There is also a delivery-speed problem. A can of energy drink is designed to be drunk cold and fast. A mug of tea is not. The same milligrams of caffeine arriving in five minutes rather than twenty produce a higher peak.

How much is too much

The strength of the product itself depends where you buy it, which is the practical consequence of the regulatory split:

  • Canada: a maximum of 180mg of caffeine per single-serving container. Health Canada also caps general adult intake at 400mg a day, and sets 300mg a day for people who are pregnant.
  • Australia and New Zealand: a maximum of 320mg per litre under Standard 2.6.4. A 500ml can therefore tops out at 160mg.
  • UK and EU: no cap on caffeine in the drink at all. The 150mg per litre figure is a labelling threshold, not a limit. A 500ml can at typical strength carries about 160mg.
  • United States: no cap and no mandatory warning. Products are marketed both as beverages and as dietary supplements, which are regulated differently again.

For counting purposes, the NHS figures are 80mg in a 250ml can of energy drink, 100mg in a cup of instant coffee, 75mg in a cup of tea and 40mg in a can of cola. The 200mg pregnancy limit is the total from all sources, so an energy drink is not an addition to your allowance, it is a large withdrawal from it.

Sugar is the quiet third problem. A standard 500ml energy drink carries in the region of 50g of sugar - well over the 30g of free sugars the NHS suggests for a whole day, in one container, at a point in pregnancy when glucose tolerance is being tested.

If you have already had one

A single can is not a harm event and no authority treats it as one. The mandatory label is a recommendation about a habit, not a threshold that triggers damage. There is nothing to test for and nothing to report.

What matters is what happens next. If you were drinking one or more a day before you knew you were pregnant, the useful step is to work out your actual daily caffeine total across everything - energy drinks, coffee, tea, cola, chocolate - and bring it under 200mg. Do it over a week rather than overnight; abrupt caffeine withdrawal causes headaches, which is the last thing you need in the first trimester.

If you are drinking several cans a day, mention it at your next midwife or antenatal appointment. Not because a specific intervention follows, but because very high caffeine intake is worth having on the record alongside blood pressure and everything else being reviewed - and because palpitations and poor sleep in early pregnancy are worth distinguishing from stimulant load.

Decaffeinated coffee, ordinary tea within the limit and plain water are all unrestricted. So-called sugar-free or zero energy drinks remove the sugar and keep everything the warning is actually about.

Where the guidance genuinely differs

Everyone who regulates energy drinks tells pregnant women not to drink them. The differences are in how strictly the product itself is controlled - and in one case, whether anything is said at all.

The UK and EU regulate the label, not the drink. Retained Regulation 1169/2011, Annex III, requires the warning on any beverage over 150mg of caffeine per litre, in the same field of vision as the product name, together with the caffeine content in mg per 100ml. Coffee and tea based drinks are exempt. There is no maximum caffeine concentration.

Canada regulates the container. Health Canada caps a single-serving caffeinated energy drink at 180mg, mandates the cautionary statement naming pregnancy and under-14s, requires a maximum servings-per-day statement, and has issued a standing public advisory warning that mixing energy drinks with alcohol may lead to drinking more alcohol than intended. Products have been recalled for missing those statements.

Australia and New Zealand regulate the concentration. Standard 2.6.4 of the Food Standards Code sets maximum permitted levels of caffeine and other substances in formulated caffeinated beverages, with caffeine capped at 320mg per litre, plus the mandatory not-recommended statement. FSANZ separately notes that there is no recognised health-based guidance value for caffeine such as an Acceptable Daily Intake.

The United States says nothing. There is no federal caffeine cap for energy drinks, no mandatory pregnancy statement, and no equivalent consumer advisory. The 200mg caffeine ceiling from ACOG's Committee Opinion 462 applies to total intake and is the only relevant American number - which means an American reader has to do the arithmetic that a British, Canadian or Australian label does for her.

If you want one rule that satisfies every jurisdiction, it is the one four of them already print: not recommended in pregnancy.

Guidance by country

Retained Regulation (EU) 1169/2011, Annex III, requires any beverage containing more than 150mg of caffeine per litre - other than drinks based on coffee or tea - to be labelled High caffeine content.
