Feet and inches. 5 ft 5 in is 165.1 cm, which is the figure the equation actually uses.

In years. Resting metabolic rate falls with age in all three equations — about 5 kcal a day per year.
Count your whole day, not just deliberate exercise. A nursing shift on your feet is not sedentary. If in doubt pick the lower one — this multiplier moves the answer more than anything else on this form.
Trimester 1 is 0+0 to 13+6, trimester 2 is 14+0 to 27+6, trimester 3 is 28+0 onwards. The third trimester is where the guidance bodies disagree most.
Be aware before you pick: no health body anywhere publishes an energy requirement for twin pregnancy. What exists is shown, and labelled as what it is.
They genuinely disagree. Follow the one your own health service publishes; all four are shown in the table either way.
Mifflin-St Jeor is the default because it was the most accurate of the common equations in the 2005 systematic review. Harris-Benedict is here because it is what many older charts and clinicians still use.

How this is calculated

Three steps: a resting metabolic rate from a published equation, an activity multiplier, and a pregnancy increment from whichever guidance body you choose. The increments are where the health services of the world part company, so this calculator shows all four rather than picking one and calling it fact.
Step 1 — resting metabolic rate
The default is the Mifflin-St Jeor equation (Mifflin MD, St Jeor ST, Hill LA, Scott BJ, Daugherty SA, Koh YO, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1990;51:241–247), female form, with the constants as published:
RMR = 9.99 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 4.92 × age(years) − 161
Almost every calculator online prints the rounded version — 10 × weight and
5 × age. At 65 kg, 165 cm and 30 years old the rounding is worth about four calories. This
calculator uses 9.99 and 4.92 because those are the published coefficients.
Mifflin-St Jeor is the default because of Frankenfield, Roth-Yousey and Compher’s systematic review (Journal of the American Dietetic Association, 2005), which concluded that it “is more likely than the other equations tested to estimate RMR to within 10% of that measured”. Both Harris-Benedict forms are offered as alternatives:

Step 2 — multiply by physical activity level
total daily energy expenditure = RMR × PAL
The multipliers offered are the familiar 1.2, 1.375, 1.55, 1.725 and 1.9. An honest caveat about them: that five-step set is a web convention with no traceable primary authority, and its bottom step sits below the floor of the ranges FAO/WHO/UNU actually publish in Human Energy Requirements (2004, chapter 5), which are 1.40 to 1.69 for a sedentary or light-activity lifestyle, 1.70 to 1.99 for moderately active and 2.00 to 2.40 for vigorously active. This choice moves the answer more than the trimester does.

Trimester 1 is 0+0 to 13+6, trimester 2 is 14+0 to 27+6 and trimester 3 is 28+0 onwards.
The 2023 US report replaced the flat 2005 increments, which is why both appear and both are dated. Its own wording: “During the first trimester (conception to 13 completed weeks) a woman’s EER is the same as her nonpregnant EER for a given PAL category; accordingly, the pregnancy equations are not used.” One caveat stated in the open: the 2023 model derives total energy expenditure from its own equations, not from Mifflin-St Jeor, so applying its deposition figure on top of a Mifflin-based estimate is a reasonable approximation rather than a reproduction of the DRI model.
Worked example
165 cm, 65 kg, 30 years old, lightly active, third trimester, following the NHS:
9.99×65 + 6.25×165 − 4.92×30 − 161 = 1372 kcal
1372 × 1.375 = 1886 kcal
1886 + 200 = 2086 kcal, displayed as 2085
Every figure is rounded to the nearest 5 kcal, because anything finer is false precision on an equation that scatters by about 10 per cent either side even when it is working well.
Twins
No health body anywhere publishes an energy requirement for twin pregnancy. The 2005 IOM committee did not define one, and none has been defined since. A 2022 review of dietary recommendations for twin pregnancy states the position exactly: “due to a lack of studies, these are only theoretical assumptions, and the actual energy needs of women pregnant with twins remain unknown.” What this calculator shows for twins is Luke’s BMI-keyed totals tabulated in that review — about 4000 kcal if underweight, 3500 at a healthy weight, 3250 if overweight and 3000 if obese — clearly labelled as a suggestion from the twin literature and never used as the headline figure. The NHS, for its part, says there is “no need to ‘eat for 2’” even when expecting more than one baby.
What this calculator will not do
It will not produce a target, a deficit or a diet, and it does not recommend counting calories in pregnancy. NICE NG247 recommendation 1.2.15 advises that intentional weight loss during pregnancy is not recommended. Height and weight can be entered in centimetres and kilograms, in feet, inches and pounds, or in feet, inches, stones and pounds; everything runs in your browser.
“Eating for two” is not what the NHS says
The phrase is so embedded that most people never think to check it. The NHS has, and its answer is unusually blunt. From the week 26 page: “There’s no need to eat for 2. You do not need any extra calories until the third trimester, which starts in week 28.”
And then, from week 28 onwards: “Now you’re in the 3rd trimester, you may need an extra 200 calories a day, but that’s not much. It’s about the same as 2 slices of wholemeal toast with margarine.”
Two slices of toast. That is the entire official UK calorie allowance for growing a person — and only for the last three months.
Except that is not what the Americans say, or the Europeans
Cross the Atlantic and the numbers change. The US Dietary Reference Intakes of 2005 gave no increase in the first trimester, then +340 kcal a day in the second and +452 in the third. EFSA, for the European Union, gives +70, +260 and +500.
At the third trimester that is a spread of 200 to 500 extra calories a day, depending purely on which health service you happen to be standing in. Three hundred calories is a sandwich. It is not a rounding error and it is not a translation problem: it is three expert bodies drawing different safety margins around the same, fairly thin, evidence.
Then in 2023 the US National Academies changed their own answer. The flat +340 and +452 were replaced by a model in which the extra energy depends on pre-pregnancy BMI: +300 a day if underweight, +200 at a healthy weight, +150 if overweight, and minus 50 if BMI is 30 or over. The direction of travel, in other words, is towards the smaller UK-style numbers rather than away from them.
This calculator shows all four and names each one. There is no honest way to give a single figure.
Why the number is smaller than it feels
A whole pregnancy costs somewhere in the region of 70,000 to 80,000 calories — which sounds enormous until you spread it over 280 days and get roughly 250 to 300 a day. And the body does not pay that bill purely by eating more. Pregnancy makes metabolism more efficient, appetite regulation does a lot of the work by itself, and many people quietly move a little less as pregnancy goes on, which offsets part of the cost.
This is why the NHS puts almost nothing in the first two trimesters. Early pregnancy grows something the size of a plum. The expensive part is the last stretch, when the baby roughly triples in weight.
The thing about the multiplier
If you take one practical point from this page, take this one: your activity setting changes the answer more than your trimester does. Moving from “sedentary” to “moderately active” adds several hundred calories to the estimate — more than any guidance body adds for being pregnant at all.
And the popular multipliers are shakier than they look. The 1.2 / 1.375 / 1.55 / 1.725 / 1.9 ladder that every calculator on the internet uses, including this one, has no identifiable primary source, and its lowest rung sits below the floor of the range FAO, WHO and the UN actually publish for a sedentary lifestyle. Treat the output as a range, not a figure.
When BMI is 30 or over
The 2023 US model subtracts 50 calories a day rather than adding anything, which means the pregnancy estimate comes out slightly below the non-pregnant one. That is shown here rather than hidden, because hiding an inconvenient guideline is how calculators lose the right to be believed.
It is emphatically not an instruction to eat less. It reflects energy already stored, and it sits alongside NICE’s clear advice that “intentional weight loss during pregnancy is not recommended because of potential adverse effects on the baby”. If your BMI is 30 or over you will usually be offered extra support, including a referral to a dietitian, and that conversation is the right place for this number.
Twins: nobody knows
This is the most honest section on the page. There is no published energy requirement for twin pregnancy. The IOM did not define one in 2005 and no body has since. The figures that circulate — 3,000 calories, 3,500, 4,000, “an extra 600 a day” — come from clinical suggestions and small studies, and the 2022 review that collects them says outright that “the actual energy needs of women pregnant with twins remain unknown”.
Meanwhile the NHS applies its “no need to eat for 2” line to multiple pregnancies too. That is a genuine contradiction and there is no resolving it from a website. If you are expecting twins, ask to be referred to a dietitian — a real conversation beats every number on this page.
What to do with the answer
Use it for scale, not as a budget. It is an equation fitted to non-pregnant adults with a published increment bolted on, and it is right to within about 10 per cent on a good day.
Nobody recommends counting calories in pregnancy. Appetite, energy, and how you feel are better daily guides, and nausea in the first trimester makes the whole exercise meaningless anyway — eat what stays down. What matters far more than the total is that the calories bring iron, folate, calcium, protein and omega-3 with them, plus the 400 micrograms of folic acid the NHS advises until week 12 and the 10 micrograms of vitamin D it advises throughout.
If you are struggling to eat, losing weight, or worried about gaining a lot quickly, that is a conversation for your midwife rather than a calculator.
