The fertile window is six days long and it ENDS on the day you ovulate. Wilcox and colleagues (NEJM, 1995) followed 221 women collecting daily urine samples and found that conception happened only when sex took place in the six days ending on ovulation day. The chance from a single act rose from about 10% five days before ovulation to about 33% on the day itself. Nothing useful happens afterwards — the egg survives roughly 12 to 24 hours.
This is a calendar estimate, not a measurement, and the honest margin is ± 3 days. Two things move it: your own cycle length varies by about 2.6 days from cycle to cycle even when you would call it regular (Bull 2019), and your luteal phase may not be the population average. Wilcox (BMJ, 2000) put it bluntly: in only about 30% of women is the fertile window entirely inside cycle days 10 to 17, the range clinical guidelines have traditionally quoted.
Why this tool does not simply subtract 14. In 612,613 measured cycles the mean luteal phase was 12.4 days, with a 95% range of 7 to 17 — and it does not shrink in step with the cycle. In 21 to 24-day cycles it averaged 11.0 days, so ovulation lands later in the cycle than "length minus 14" predicts. For a 22-day cycle the old formula puts ovulation on day 9; the measured data put it on day 12. Three days is the difference between hitting the window and missing it entirely.
You do not need to hit a single perfect day. ACOG advises sex every day or every other day across the six-day window, and NICE (NG257, recommendation 1.5.1) says vaginal sex every 2 to 3 days optimises the chance of pregnancy without any timing at all. Couples who simply have sex two or three times a week cover every fertile window they will ever have, and are spared the calendar entirely.
On sperm survival, the guidance genuinely disagrees: the NHS says sperm can survive in the fallopian tubes for up to 7 days, ACOG says up to 5. The conception data settle it in practice — pregnancies from sex more than five days before ovulation are rare enough that Wilcox found none, so this tool uses the six-day window.
Late ovulation is real and it cannot be predicted. In Wilcox's cohort ovulation happened as early as cycle day 8 and as late as day 60, and 4 to 6% of women who had reached the fifth week of a cycle were still in their fertile window. Even women who described their cycles as regular had a 1 to 6% chance of being fertile on the day their next period was due. A calendar cannot see any of this coming; ovulation strips and cervical mucus can.
If your cycles are shorter than 21 days or longer than 35, or the gap changes a lot month to month, the NHS classes that as irregular and it is worth a GP appointment — irregular cycles can be a sign that ovulation is not happening every month, which no calculator can detect. That is a treatable thing to find out, not a verdict.

Three steps, all of which you can check on paper.

Step 1 — find the ovulation day. Most calculators use ovulation = last period + (cycle length − 14). That constant is a textbook convention, not a measurement. Bull and colleagues (npj Digital Medicine, 2019) analysed 612,613 ovulatory cycles from 124,648 women using daily basal body temperature and urinary LH, and found a mean luteal phase of 12.4 days with a 95% range of 7 to 17 — and, crucially, a luteal phase that does not shorten in step with the cycle. Their Table 1 gives mean follicular phase length by cycle length: 10.4 days for cycles of 15–20 days (mean cycle 18.4), 12.4 for 21–24 (mean 23.4), 15.2 for 25–30 (mean 27.6), 15.4 for cycles of exactly 28 days, 19.5 for 31–35 (mean 32.4) and 26.8 for 36–50 (mean 39.8). This tool interpolates that column linearly and places ovulation on cycle day = round(follicular phase length), because Bull defines the follicular phase as day 1 of bleeding through to the estimated day of ovulation inclusive.

The practical difference is concentrated in short cycles. For a 28-day cycle this method and the old formula agree exactly on cycle day 15; for a 35-day cycle they agree again on day 22. For a 22-day cycle they do not: the measured luteal phase in short cycles averages 11.0 days rather than 14, so ovulation falls on cycle day 12, not day 9. Three days is the difference between hitting the window and missing it.

Step 2 — the window is six days and it ends on ovulation day. Wilcox, Weinberg and Baird (NEJM, 1995) followed 221 women with daily urine sampling: conception occurred only when intercourse took place in a six-day period ending on the estimated day of ovulation, with the probability of conception rising from 0.10 five days before ovulation to 0.33 on the day itself. So the window is ovulation − 5 through ovulation. Dunson and colleagues (Human Reproduction, 1999), correcting for imperfect ovulation markers, put the single highest day the day before ovulation, with probabilities close to zero afterwards — the egg survives roughly 12 to 24 hours.

Step 3 — state the uncertainty. Two independent errors add. Your own cycle length varies (Bull: one standard deviation of a woman's own cycle lengths averages 2.6 days) and your luteal phase may not be the population mean (standard deviation about 2.3 days). Combined: √(2.6² + 2.3²) ≈ 3.5 days, which the tool reports as a plus-or-minus rather than hiding. In a tracked-ovulation entry that error disappears; from a positive LH test the tool counts ovulation as the next day, because ACOG states a positive means ovulation is likely within 24 to 48 hours.

The dates that follow. Next period = last period + cycle length. Earliest useful pregnancy test = the first day of the missed period (NHS), or at least 21 days after unprotected sex. Ovulation strips: start on the first day of the fertile window, so an early surge cannot be missed.

Six days, and the window closes on ovulation

The single most useful fact about conception is also the one most often taught backwards. There are six days in a cycle when sex can result in a pregnancy: the five days before ovulation, and ovulation day itself. The window ends when the egg is released. It does not extend past it in any meaningful way, because the egg survives about 12 to 24 hours while sperm can wait several days in the reproductive tract.

That asymmetry has a practical consequence. Sex two days before you ovulate is far more useful than sex the day after, and a couple who wait for a positive ovulation test before doing anything have already used up most of their window. Wilcox and colleagues established this in 1995 by following 221 women planning a pregnancy and collecting daily urine samples: conception happened only in that six-day span, with the chance from a single act of intercourse rising from about 10% five days out to about 33% on ovulation day. A 1999 reanalysis that corrected for the difficulty of pinpointing ovulation put the single best day the day before.

Why 'cycle length minus 14' misleads short cycles

Almost every free ovulation calculator subtracts a flat 14 days from your cycle length. That number is a convention inherited from mid-century textbooks, and the largest real-world dataset on the question shows where it fails. Bull and colleagues analysed 612,613 ovulatory cycles from 124,648 women, using daily temperature readings and urinary LH rather than self-report. The mean luteal phase was 12.4 days, not 14, with a 95% range of 7 to 17 days. Only 13% of cycles were exactly 28 days long.

More importantly, the luteal phase does not shrink at the same rate as the cycle. In cycles of 21 to 24 days it averaged 11.0 days; in cycles of 31 to 35 days, 12.9. Almost all of the variation in cycle length comes from the first half — the run-up to ovulation. So on a 22-day cycle the old formula predicts ovulation on day 9, while the measured data put it on day 12. A woman with short cycles following a standard calculator would be having sex three days before her real window opened.

For a 28-day cycle, reassuringly, the two methods agree exactly: ovulation on cycle day 15. The correction matters at the edges, which is precisely where people most need a tool that has looked at the data.

How wrong a calendar prediction can be

Even done properly, this is an estimate. Two errors stack: your cycle length moves from month to month by about 2.6 days on average even among women who describe themselves as regular, and your personal luteal phase may not be the population mean. Together that is roughly three and a half days of standard deviation on the ovulation date, which is why this tool prints a margin instead of a single confident answer.

Wilcox, Dunson and Baird measured exactly this in the BMJ in 2000, across 696 cycles: 'In only about 30% of women is the fertile window entirely within the days of the menstrual cycle identified by clinical guidelines — that is, between days 10 and 17.' Among their 28-day cycles, ovulation occurred exactly 14 days before the next period in only 10% of them; the gap ranged from 7 to 19 days. On every cycle day between 6 and 21, at least one woman in ten was in her fertile window.

Late ovulation, which no calendar can see

In the same cohort, ovulation occurred as early as cycle day 8 and as late as day 60. Among women who reached the fifth week of a cycle, 4 to 6% were still in their fertile window, and even women with regular cycles had a 1 to 6% chance of being fertile on the day their next period was due. Illness, travel, stress and disrupted sleep all delay ovulation, and a calendar has no way of knowing. This is the argument for ovulation strips or cervical mucus rather than dates alone — and it is also why calendar methods are poor contraception.

How long sperm actually survive

Here the guidance genuinely disagrees. The NHS says sperm can survive in the fallopian tubes for up to seven days; ACOG says up to five. The conception data settle it in practice: Wilcox found no pregnancies from intercourse more than five days before ovulation, which is why the six-day window is the number used clinically and here.

You do not have to time anything at all

NICE guideline NG257, recommendation 1.5.1, is blunt about this: vaginal sexual intercourse every two to three days optimises the chance of pregnancy. Sex two or three times a week covers every fertile window you will ever have, without a calendar, a strip or a thermometer. ACOG's advice for couples who do want to time it is sex every day or every other day across the six-day window — not a single perfect moment. For many couples the untimed approach is both equally effective and considerably less miserable.

When irregular cycles are telling you something

The NHS classes periods as irregular if the gap between them is under 21 days or over 35 days. Irregular cycles can mean ovulation is not happening every month, which no calculator can detect and which is frequently treatable. ACOG suggests an infertility evaluation after 12 months of trying if you are under 35, after 6 months if you are older than 35, and a conversation with an ob-gyn now if you are older than 40. Going early is not giving up; it is finding out.
