How this is calculated
FormulaEvery date below is counted from one anchor: the day of ovulation. There is no hidden model — it is day arithmetic, and the honest part is the width of the window rather than the precision of a single day.
If you give a period date instead of an ovulation date, ovulation is estimated first:
ovulation = first day of last period + (cycle length − 14)
So a 28-day cycle puts ovulation on day 14, and a 35-day cycle on day 21. The 14 is the assumed luteal phase — the gap between ovulation and the next period. It is a convention, not a constant: across 612,613 tracked ovulatory cycles the mean luteal phase was 12.4 days with a 95% range of 7 to 17 days. If yours differs, every date shifts with it.
From ovulation:
- implantation window = ovulation + 6 days to ovulation + 12 days
- most likely stretch = ovulation + 8 to ovulation + 10 days (84% of pregnancies lasting at least six weeks)
- single most common day = ovulation + 9 days
- earliest a test might show anything = ovulation + 9 days
- period due, and the first day a negative test means much = ovulation + 14 days
- near the detection ceiling = ovulation + 21 days
Worked example: ovulation on 14 August 2026 gives an implantation window of 20 to 26 August, most likely 22 to 24 August, with a period due on 28 August. Entering 1 August 2026 as a period date with a 35-day cycle instead puts ovulation on 22 August and the window on 28 August to 3 September.
The 6-to-12-day window and the 8-to-10-day concentration are measured values, not assumptions: the North Carolina Early Pregnancy Study dated implantation in 189 pregnancies by the first day hCG appeared in daily urine samples. The test-date figures come from the same cohort re-analysed for testing limits — even a flawless hCG test could detect at most about 90% of pregnancies on the first day of the missed period, rising to about 97% a week later.

Implantation is the moment a pregnancy becomes detectable, which is why so much attention lands on it. It is also the moment nobody can feel, date or influence — and understanding the shape of the window is more useful than fixing on a single day.
Where the 6-to-12-day window comes from
The number that matters here was measured rather than assumed. In the North Carolina Early Pregnancy Study, 221 women planning to conceive collected daily urine samples, and implantation was dated by the first day hCG appeared. Across 189 pregnancies, implantation happened between 6 and 12 days after ovulation. Of the pregnancies that lasted at least six weeks, 84% implanted on day 8, 9 or 10.
That is a distribution with a fat middle, not a fixed appointment. Plenty of ordinary, healthy pregnancies implant on day 7 or day 11.
There is no single "day 9"
Calculators that hand you one date are inventing a precision that the underlying data does not contain. Day 9 is the most common single day, so it is worth showing — but the window is the answer, and the window is a week wide.
The same study did find that later implantation was associated with a higher rate of very early loss: 13% for pregnancies implanting by day 9, 26% on day 10, 52% on day 11 and 82% after that. It is worth knowing that this pattern exists, and equally worth knowing that nobody can determine their own implantation day without daily hormone testing. It is background on the research, not a number to measure yourself against.
When hCG becomes detectable
hCG is only produced once implantation begins. Before that date there is genuinely nothing to detect, which is the single most useful thing to understand about early testing: a negative test taken at 8 days past ovulation is not evidence of anything at all.
Once production starts, hCG roughly doubles every couple of days. That steepness is why a test can be stubbornly blank one morning and clearly positive two mornings later, and why testing again after 48 hours is more informative than testing again the same afternoon. Most home tests need around 25 mIU/mL to register; the more sensitive ones claim about 10.
The earliest a test is worth taking
The same research group later worked out the ceiling on how well any pregnancy test could possibly perform. Using an extremely sensitive assay on daily first-morning urine, they found that on the first day of the missed period, the best achievable detection rate is about 90%, rising to about 97% one week later. Around 10% of clinical pregnancies simply have not implanted yet by the day the period is due.
That is the ceiling for a perfect laboratory test, not for a supermarket stick. The NHS advice is straightforward: tests are most reliable from the first day of a missed period, a positive result is almost certainly correct, and a negative one is much less trustworthy. Use first-morning urine, when hCG is most concentrated.
Implantation bleeding and cramping
Light spotting somewhere in this window is often called implantation bleeding. It is common enough to be unremarkable — and its absence means nothing whatsoever, because most people who conceive notice no bleeding at all. Spotting at this point in a cycle also has plenty of other causes.
Cramping, sore breasts and tiredness in the same stretch are driven by progesterone, which rises after ovulation whether or not conception has happened. That is exactly why symptom-spotting during the two-week wait feels identical either way, and why it cannot tell you anything that a test will not tell you more honestly in a few days.
Why the ovulation date is the weak link
Everything above rests on one input. An LH test tells you a surge happened, not that an egg was released, and ovulation usually follows the surge by about a day. A temperature rise confirms ovulation only in retrospect. Move the ovulation date by two days and the whole window moves with it.
Conception is treated here as the same anchor as ovulation, because fertilisation happens within roughly a day of the egg being released. The date sex happened is a different thing: sperm can survive several days in the reproductive tract, so intercourse on day 10 can produce a conception on day 14.
If you started from a period date
Working ovulation out from a period date means subtracting a luteal phase of 14 days from your cycle length. That number is a convention. In a dataset of 612,613 tracked ovulatory cycles the mean cycle was 29.3 days and the mean luteal phase 12.4 days, with a 95% range of 7 to 17 days. Anyone whose luteal phase runs short or long will ovulate on a different day than the arithmetic assumes, and an ovulation date entered directly is always the better anchor.
