Be honest rather than aspirational. The step between "lightly active" and "moderately active" is worth more calories than breastfeeding is.
The cost changes with the stage, not with your weight. A six-month-old on solid food takes less milk than a six-week-old on nothing else.
They genuinely differ, and two of the four decline to publish a number. Pick the one your health service follows rather than the biggest figure.
Mifflin-St Jeor is the default because it is the one most often found to land within 10% of a measured rate. All three are estimates fitted to populations, not measurements of you.

How this is calculated

Three steps, all of which you can do on paper.
Step 1: resting metabolic rate
The default equation is Mifflin-St Jeor (Mifflin MD, St Jeor ST, Hill LA, Scott BJ, Daugherty SA, Koh YO, Am J Clin Nutr 1990;51:241-247), female form, with the published constants:
RMR = 9.99 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 4.92 × age(years) − 161
Harris-Benedict is offered in both forms — the 1919 original
(655.0955 + 9.5634×kg + 1.8496×cm − 4.6756×age) and the Roza & Shizgal 1984
revision (447.593 + 9.247×kg + 3.098×cm − 4.330×age) — so this tool and the
pregnancy calorie tool agree digit for digit on the same body.
Step 2: multiply by an activity level
total daily energy = RMR × physical activity level. The 1.2 / 1.375 / 1.55 / 1.725 / 1.9 set is the convention every online calculator uses; it has no traceable primary authority, and its bottom step sits below the floor of the FAO/WHO/UNU lifestyle bands (1.40–1.69 sedentary or light, 1.70–1.99 moderately active, 2.00–2.40 vigorously active). Breastfeeding does not move this number. FAO/WHO/UNU: “Compared with non-pregnant, non-lactating women, during lactation there are no significant changes in BMR, efficiency of work performance, or TEE.”
Step 3: add the lactation increment
estimated daily energy = total daily energy + lactation increment. FAO/WHO/UNU is the only body of the four that publishes the whole derivation, so it is worth setting out in full:
- 807 g of milk a day × 2.8 kJ/g ÷ 0.80 efficiency = 2.8 MJ/day, which is 675 kcal/day gross, for the first six months of exclusive breastfeeding.
- A well-nourished woman losing 0.8 kg a month mobilises 27.2 MJ/kg × 0.8 kg = 0.72 MJ/day, which is 170 kcal/day from fat laid down in pregnancy.
- 675 − 170 = 505 kcal/day from food. Undernourished women, and women who did not gain enough weight in pregnancy, need the full 675, because the fat stores are not there.
- From six months, with the baby partially breastfed and milk production averaging 550 g/day, the cost is 1.925 MJ/day, which is 460 kcal/day.
- Past twelve months the report stops and says why: “Energy requirements for milk production in the second six months are dependent on rates of milk production, which are highly variable among women and populations.” The tool stops there too.
NIH / NICHD gives +450 to 500 kcal/day, unsplit by stage, and applies it to “women who are not trying to lose weight following pregnancy”. The NHS publishes no extra-calorie figure anywhere. The US Dietary Guidelines 2025-2030 give lactation one paragraph and no number. Where a body publishes nothing, this tool prints your estimate without an increment and explains the absence rather than borrowing someone else's figure.
Does breastfeeding really burn 500 calories a day?
It costs about that, yes. Whether you have to eat it is a different question, and it is the question almost every version of this claim skips.
The FAO/WHO/UNU expert consultation on human energy requirements worked it out from the milk itself. A woman exclusively breastfeeding produces around 807 g of milk a day for the first six months. Milk carries about 2.8 kJ per gram, and making it is roughly 80% efficient, so the gross cost is 2.8 MJ a day — 675 kilocalories. That is the number your body spends.
The number you eat is smaller, because pregnancy laid down fat for exactly this. A well-nourished woman losing around 0.8 kg a month is already supplying about 170 kcal a day from her own stores. Subtract that and you get 505 kcal a day from food. Which is where the familiar "about 500" comes from, and it is a net figure with a condition attached, not a headline.
The condition matters. FAO/WHO/UNU is explicit that women who were undernourished, or who gained too little weight in pregnancy, should take the full 675 kcal from food. You cannot draw on stores you do not have.
Why the four bodies disagree by 675 calories
Ask four health authorities how much extra a breastfeeding woman needs and you get a spread that runs from nothing to 675 kilocalories a day.
The NHS publishes no figure at all. Its page on breastfeeding and diet covers fruit and vegetables, fibre, protein, dairy, fluids, oily fish, caffeine and vitamin D, and never mentions a calorie. It opens with "You do not need to follow a special diet while you're breastfeeding."
The current US Dietary Guidelines, the 2025-2030 edition, give lactation a single paragraph: "Lactation increases energy and nutrient needs to support milk production and maternal health." They then name nutrients — vitamin B12, omega-3, folate, vitamin A — and no number. If you have seen "330 to 400 extra calories" attributed to the US guidelines, it is not in the edition currently in force.
The NIH's NICHD is the most interesting of the four, because it gives a number and then undercuts it. Its answer to whether you need more calories opens: "the answer is no. You can take in the same number of calories that you did before becoming pregnant. This strategy helps with weight loss after birth." Its 450 to 500 kcal figure is for women who are not trying to lose the pregnancy weight.
None of them is wrong. They are making different judgements about what a number does to a reader — and two of them have concluded that publishing one invites counting, and counting invites restricting.
What the calculator actually does with your numbers
It estimates your resting metabolic rate from your height, weight and age, multiplies it by an activity level, and adds the increment published by whichever body you pick. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is transmitted.
Two honest limits are worth stating before you read the number. First, the equations were fitted to populations and not measured on you; a 10% error band is normal, which on a 2,000 kcal estimate is 200 kcal in either direction. Second, the activity step moves the answer more than breastfeeding does. Going one rung up the activity list changes the total by more than the entire lactation increment. Both numbers are estimates, and the smaller one is not the shakier one.
Hunger is the better instrument
There is a reason the NHS and the US guidelines both decline to give you a target. Appetite while breastfeeding is steep, obvious and free, and it adjusts itself daily in a way no equation can. The practical advice on the NHS page is about what to eat rather than how much: a varied diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables, starchy foods, protein and dairy, and a drink beside you when you settle down to feed.
Three NHS limits are worth more attention than the calorie count. No more than 200 mg of caffeine a day while breastfeeding — a mug of coffee is about 90 mg and a mug of tea about 55 mg. No more than two portions of oily fish a week. And everyone, including breastfeeding women, should consider a daily 10 microgram vitamin D supplement through autumn and winter.
What this will not tell you
It will not give you a diet, a deficit or a weight-loss plan, and it does not claim that eating less will reduce your milk. What the evidence does say is narrower and more useful: the energy cost of breastfeeding is real, part of it is already being paid out of your body, and a woman with nothing spare to draw on needs the whole of it from food.
If you are worried about your weight, your appetite or your milk, that is a conversation with a GP, midwife, health visitor or dietitian. A calculator cannot see you, and none of the four bodies above meant their figure to be used without one.
