When can babies go on a boat?

The verdict

Not until your baby is big enough to wear a lifejacket that actually fits, and one national body puts a number on that.

That is an equipment constraint rather than a medical one, and it is the cleanest possible argument. If no approved device exists in your baby's size, there is no configuration of the trip that makes them safe in the water.

Why the weight, and not an age

A lifejacket works by floating a body in a particular orientation, face clear of the water. It does that using buoyancy distributed for the weight and proportions of the wearer.

Babies are the hardest case. Their heads make up a much larger proportion of their body weight than an adult's, which is why the RYA notes that children's life jackets typically have more buoyancy around the neck and head. Below a certain size there is not enough body to hold a device on, and the device rides up over the face – which is worse than useless.

That is why the RYA says newborns and smaller babies may not find a suitable fit, as the jackets will not be small enough to correctly support them.

The fit test

Transport Canada publishes the check, and it takes ten seconds.

The device should fit snugly and must not ride up over the child's chin or ears. Lift it at the shoulders: there should be less than 7.6 cm (3 inches) between the child's shoulders and the device.

If it slides up toward the face when you pull, it is too big, and in the water it will do the same thing while the child's weight hangs below it.

The RYA's advice follows from the same reasoning: take the child with you when buying or hiring, because that is the only way to confirm the right weight category and fit, and be aware that if a life jacket is too big there is a risk its flotation properties will not work effectively.

What the boat is does not change the answer

People reasonably assume a large ferry is a different proposition from a small motorboat, and in terms of the likelihood of ending up in the water it is. In terms of what happens if you do, it is not.

Transport Canada notes that Canadian vessels are not currently required to carry infant lifejackets, and encourages parents to bring their own when on board any vessel. That is worth knowing before you assume equipment will be provided.

Rowing boats, small motorboats, dinghies, canoes, kayaks and paddleboards are the higher-risk end: low freeboard, easily capsized, and no crew but you. Larger passenger vessels and ferries with enclosed decks are a different risk profile, but the flotation question is unchanged if a person goes over the side.

Supervision does the rest

A lifejacket is what happens after something has gone wrong. Supervision is what stops it.

The AAP's drowning prevention guidance is built on close, constant, attentive supervision within arm's reach whenever a young child is in or near water, and on the fact that drowning is silent and fast. On a boat that means one adult whose only job is the child, in physical contact or within reach, for the entire time on board – not sharing the job, not looking at a phone, not helping with lines.

Transport Canada makes the same point: children should be within arm's reach as well as wearing a proper flotation device at all times.

The other hazards on a boat

Even for a baby over the threshold, a boat concentrates several risks at once.

Sun. Water reflects UV upwards and there is rarely proper shade. Babies under six months should be kept out of direct sunlight entirely, which on an open boat is very hard to achieve. A canopy, long sleeves, a wide-brimmed hat and staying inside a cabin all help; a muslin over a pram does not, and should never be used.

Heat and cold. Cabins get very hot at anchor; open decks get cold quickly under way, particularly with wind chill. Babies gain and lose heat far faster than adults.

Noise. Engine noise on a small boat is sustained and can be loud. Ear protection sized for infants exists; earplugs are a choking hazard and should not be used at this age.

Motion. There is no anti-sickness medication licensed for babies, and none should be given without medical advice.

Falls and hard edges. Boats are full of steps, hatches, cleats and low rails. A crawling baby on a deck needs the same containment as one at the top of a staircase.

Cold water. Immersion in cold water incapacitates adults quickly and babies faster.

What to do instead, and when

Below the threshold, the answer is to wait. A short ferry crossing with the baby in a carrier, inside, seated, is a different proposition from a day on a small boat, and many families make that judgement – but it is a judgement, and the equipment gap does not close because the vessel is large.

Once your baby is over 9 kg and a device fits properly, the checklist is: the right lifejacket, worn from before boarding until after stepping off; a dedicated adult within arm's reach; shade and layers; short trips in calm conditions to start; and an honest assessment of the boat and the water.

And check whether the flotation device is an approved lifejacket or a buoyancy aid. They are not the same: a lifejacket is designed to turn an unconscious wearer face-up, and a buoyancy aid is not.

Where guidance genuinely differs

Only Canada publishes a weight threshold. 9 kg, or 20 lb, with the explicit recommendation that children reach it before being brought aboard. No UK or Australian body sets an equivalent figure.

The UK addresses fit rather than a floor. The RYA describes the problem – newborns and smaller babies may not find a suitable fit – without converting it into a minimum weight, and puts the responsibility on trying the device on the child.

Only Canada publishes a measurable fit test. Less than 7.6 cm between shoulders and device, and no riding up over the chin or ears. That test works on any lifejacket anywhere.

Vessels are not required to carry infant sizes. Transport Canada says so directly for Canadian vessels, and the practical lesson generalises: bring your own rather than expecting to be equipped on arrival.
