Is it safe to take my baby to a concert or fireworks display?

Only with proper ear protection. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises avoiding bringing young children to excessively noisy venues such as concerts, sporting events or fireworks displays, and says that if you do attend, children should use protective earmuffs, including young infants.
The verdict
Take a baby to a fireworks display or an outdoor gig only with proper ear protection on, and preferably not at all in the first months.
The American Academy of Pediatrics is direct about it. Its advice, in the words of the co-author of its policy statement on noise, is that caregivers should avoid bringing young children to excessively noisy venues such as concerts, sporting events or fireworks displays - and that if they do attend these types of events, children should be sure to use protective earmuffs, including on young infants.
That is a two-part answer and both parts matter. The default is not to go. If you go, the ear muffs are not optional.
The numbers
The AAP states that noise above 70 decibels over a prolonged period of time may start to damage hearing, and that loud noise above 120 decibels - the example it gives is a thunderclap or a jetliner take-off - can cause immediate harm to the ears.
For context it notes that the sounds of a motorcycle, a rock concert and a movie theatre range from 80 to up to 115 decibels.
The AAP is also careful to say something that gets misused constantly: the widely quoted 85-decibel threshold is based on an occupational standard averaged over eight hours, is intended for adults, and should not be assumed to be safe for children or teenagers.
Fireworks sit at the top of the scale. A close firework is an impulse noise, meaning the peak arrives faster than any protective reflex can respond, and impulse noise damages hearing differently from sustained noise.
Why babies are worse off than adults at the same event
A baby standing next to you is not experiencing the same sound level you are. A smaller ear canal concentrates sound pressure at the eardrum, so the same ambient level produces a higher pressure inside an infant ear than inside an adult one.
A baby also cannot do any of the mitigating things an adult does automatically: move away, cover their ears, or say that it hurts. The distress signal available to them is crying, which is easy to attribute to tiredness at an evening event.
Noise-induced hearing loss is sensorineural, which the AAP notes is usually irreversible. There is no treatment that reverses it, which is why the whole approach is preventive.
Ear muffs, not earplugs
For a baby the choice is made for you. Earplugs are small objects that fit in a mouth, which makes them a choking hazard in this age group. Ear defenders that sit over the ear are the only appropriate option.
Choose ones sized for an infant head - adult ear defenders leak around the edges and do nothing - with a soft, wide headband that does not put pressure on the skull, and a cushion that seals against the head rather than pinching the ear. RNID's general hearing protection advice is that protection has to fit and be worn consistently to do anything at all; a defender pushed off after five minutes is decorative.
Ear defenders do not make a loud environment safe. They reduce exposure by a fixed amount. At a close-range fireworks display, reduced exposure to a very loud impulse is still exposure to a loud impulse. Distance does more than any headset.
Distance, duration and the practical version
Three things reduce the dose, in order of effectiveness.
Distance first. Sound pressure falls quickly with distance from the source. Watching fireworks from a field two streets away, or from a window, is a completely different exposure from standing at the rope. For live music, being at the back of an outdoor field is not the same as being near a speaker stack, and indoor venues are worse than outdoor ones because sound reflects rather than dissipating.
Duration second. Damage accumulates. Twenty minutes and leaving beats staying for the headline set.
Protection third. Ear muffs on before you arrive within earshot, not once the noise starts.
The AAP offers a serviceable rule of thumb for everything else: if an environment sounds too loud for an adult, it probably is too loud for a child, and "too loud" can mean having to raise your voice to speak with someone an arm's length away.
The rest of the event
Noise is the reason this page exists, but it is not the only thing that goes wrong at a festival or a display with a baby.
Heat and sun matter at daytime events. Do not drape a cover over the pram to make shade - use a clip-on parasol that lets air circulate, as the NHS and the Lullaby Trust both advise. Keep feeds frequent in hot weather.
Crowds are a physical hazard in themselves. A pram in a dense standing crowd is difficult to move and impossible to evacuate quickly; a sling or carrier keeps the baby high and against you, though it also puts them closer to your ear level for noise.
Evening displays are cold. Bonfire night in the UK means an outdoor event in November, and a baby who is not moving loses heat much faster than the adults walking around them.
And a baby who cannot settle is telling you something. If your baby is distressed and cannot be soothed at a loud event, the answer is to leave rather than to wait it out.
Where guidance differs
The AAP is the only body among those we cite that gives an explicit instruction about taking young children to noisy venues, which makes it the reference point for this question internationally.
In the UK, RNID publishes general hearing protection advice for the public, and individual NHS audiology services publish leaflets on protecting children's hearing and on the use of ear defenders, but there is no single national NHS page equivalent to the AAP statement. UK parents are effectively working from AAP guidance whether they realise it or not.
The World Health Organization has published a monograph on noise exposure limits for children in recreational settings, which is the most rigorous international treatment of exactly this question, though it is aimed at policymakers and venue regulation rather than at parents.
Nobody publishes a safe decibel level for infants at entertainment events, because there is not one.

The applicable principles are the same as the AAP's: reduce exposure by distance and duration first, use over-ear defenders sized for a child rather than earplugs, and treat noise-induced hearing loss as permanent and therefore worth preventing.
