Can I drink kombucha while breastfeeding?
Safe in moderation — Small amounts of commercial product; avoid home-brewed
Probably fine in small amounts, but nobody official has ruled on it. Kombucha is unpasteurised, contains caffeine from the tea it is made with, and retains a small amount of alcohol from fermentation. Commercial pasteurised or tested products are the safer choice. Avoid home-brewed batches.
The verdict
A small amount of a commercially produced kombucha is unlikely to cause a problem. Home-brewed kombucha is the version worth avoiding. And the honest headline is that no health service or breastfeeding organisation publishes specific guidance on kombucha in lactation, so anyone quoting you a limit is inventing it.
What we can do is take the three things kombucha actually contains and apply the guidance that does exist for each of them.
The three components that matter
Alcohol
Kombucha is made by fermenting sweetened tea, and fermentation produces alcohol. Commercial producers control and test it so the finished drink sits within the legal threshold for a soft drink, but the amount is not zero and it continues to change in the bottle if the product is unpasteurised and stored warm. Home brews are unmeasured and can be considerably stronger.
The NHS position on alcohol and breastfeeding is that it is safer not to drink any alcohol while breastfeeding, but an occasional drink is unlikely to harm your baby. The quantity in a glass of commercial kombucha is far below a standard drink. The quantity in an enthusiastic home brew is genuinely unknown, which is the problem.
Caffeine
Kombucha is tea. The caffeine is not fully consumed by fermentation, so a bottle carries a real, if modest, amount. The NHS counts caffeine from all sources towards a daily ceiling for breastfeeding parents, including tea, coffee, chocolate, energy drinks and soft drinks, and describes caffeine as a stimulant that can make your baby restless. Unpasteurised live cultures
Most kombucha is unpasteurised, which is the entire point of the product for the people who drink it. Unpasteurised products carry a higher risk of contamination with harmful bacteria, and food safety guidance treats them with more caution for people who are pregnant, very young, older or immunocompromised.
The important distinction here is that breastfeeding is not pregnancy. The listeria concern in pregnancy is about infection crossing the placenta to the fetus. That route no longer exists once your baby is born. If you get a food-borne infection while breastfeeding, you have a food-borne infection: unpleasant for you, but not passed through your milk, as our page on food poisoning explains.
So the unpasteurised issue drops from serious to ordinary once you are breastfeeding. Ordinary still means choosing products made under proper controls.
Commercial versus home-brewed
This is the practical distinction the whole page comes down to.
Commercial kombucha is made under food hygiene controls, with monitored fermentation, tested alcohol content and traceable labelling. Food Standards Scotland and the Food Standards Agency require registered food businesses to manage exactly these hazards.
Home-brewed kombucha has none of that. The culture is grown in an open vessel over days at room temperature, the acidity and alcohol are unmeasured, and mould contamination of the culture is a recognised problem. Passed-on cultures from friends compound the uncertainty. There is no way to know what is in the finished drink.
If you brew at home, that is your call for yourself. While breastfeeding and sleep-deprived, the case for buying a bottle instead is straightforward.
What about my baby?
Nothing in kombucha other than caffeine and alcohol reaches your milk in any meaningful way. Live cultures do not transfer from your gut into breast milk, and the acids in the drink are digested like any other food acid.
There is no evidence that kombucha improves milk supply, infant gut health or anything else via breastfeeding, despite what it is marketed for. If you enjoy it, drink it. If you are drinking it as a supply strategy, it is not one.
Keep it away from your baby directly. Fermented drinks are not appropriate for infants, and the caffeine, acid and alcohol all make it unsuitable.
If you have symptoms
Stomach upset, bloating and headaches after kombucha are reported and are usually dose-related. Stop and see whether they settle. Sudden severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea deserves medical advice, especially if you cannot keep fluids down while producing milk.
Where guidance differs
There is nothing to differ, and that is the finding.
The UK, through the NHS, publishes advice on alcohol and on caffeine while breastfeeding, and general food safety advice on unpasteurised products, but says nothing about kombucha specifically.
Ireland, Australia, Canada and the US are the same: no lactation guidance on kombucha exists from any national body.
Pregnancy advice against kombucha is easier to find, and it is frequently copied across to breastfeeding by websites that have not noticed the difference. The placental route that drives the pregnancy caution does not apply after birth.
Our reading of the guidance that does exist: a glass of a reputable commercial kombucha is a minor entry on your caffeine total and a negligible entry on alcohol. A home brew of unknown strength while responsible for a newborn is not worth it.
What about kefir and other fermented drinks?
The same reasoning applies across the category, with one useful distinction.
Milk kefir and water kefir are fermented in the same way as kombucha and carry the same combination of live cultures and a trace of alcohol, but no caffeine unless tea is involved. Commercially produced versions made from pasteurised milk under food hygiene controls are the straightforward choice.
Live yoghurt, sauerkraut, kimchi and miso are fermented foods rather than fermented drinks, and none of them raises any breastfeeding question at all. They are not alcoholic in any practical sense, and the pregnancy cautions people remember about them mostly relate to unpasteurised dairy and to salt content rather than to fermentation.
Ginger beer and other traditionally fermented soft drinks vary enormously in alcohol content depending on how they were made, and home-brewed versions can be considerably stronger than the label on a shop-bought bottle would suggest. Treat them the same way as home-brewed kombucha.
None of these has been shown to improve milk supply or infant gut health through breastfeeding. If you like them, they are food. If you are taking them as a supplement with an expected effect, the evidence is not there.
The NHS advises that it is safer not to drink any alcohol while breastfeeding, though an occasional drink is unlikely to harm your baby, and that caffeine from all sources including tea should be kept within its daily limit because it is a stimulant that can make your baby restless. There is no NHS guidance on kombucha specifically. Food Standards Scotland advises particular care with unpasteurised products.
